The perfect coffee circle

project

Personal project beyond coffee

To celebrate the unique craft of making limited edition specialty coffee and to preserve them, I chose this unique approach—using this very coffee as the medium to develop the photographs.

Person with tattoos on hand pours coffee grounds from a jar into a paper filter over a Chemex coffee maker on a wooden table.

Making my own, single use Caffenol developing emulsion from the very coffee I photographed.

Was preceded by testing various films and coffee.

I chose to work with middle format black and white film Kodak TRI-X TX 400/120.

When working with coffee beans, the amount of coffee is naturally higher than when using instant coffee, which is more concentrated.

A person with tattoos on their arm is holding a plastic bottle under running water, pouring it into a black container on a table, all illuminated by red lighting in a photographic darkroom.

The Caffenol process is chemical-free (aside from the fixer), therefore more environmentally friendly developing process suitable for Black&white films. Usually made with instant coffee, I wanted to push the method further using the real coffee beans.

The results

Person with tattoos using a paintbrush on paper, coffee cup nearby, on a wooden table.

After the photos developed in coffee, I create a hand bind book where the photos are printed on paper soaked in that coffee. Perfect way to preserve, yet don’t loose touch.

THE BOOK

Modern house with wood siding and large glass windows, stone steps leading up to it, surrounded by a landscaped yard with grass and rocks, mountain range in the background.
